The Greater Reading Chamber Alliance (GRCA) is pleased to share the latest Economic Intelligence Report for Berks County, developed in partnership with the Lancaster EDC’s Center for Regional Analysis. This quarterly update provides a detailed overview of how national and state trends are shaping our local economy, with a focus on employment, wages, housing and consumer activity.
These insights are designed to help business leaders, policymakers and community partners make informed decisions and prepare for the months ahead.
Q2 2025 Economic Highlights:
- Berks County’s labor force declined by 1,200 people, while employment fell by 2,300. Retirements are increasing as the population ages, with 5,100 more workers over age 65 since 2014 and fewer mid-career replacements available.

- The unemployment rate averaged 4.6% in June, slightly higher than last year but still well below the county’s long-term June average of 5.8%. Employers continue to report challenges filling high-skill positions.
- Average hourly wages dipped by 16 cents from June 2024 to June 2025, reflecting the retirement of higher-earning employees. Inflation rose 2.7% year-over-year, led by higher housing and service costs.
- The housing market remains competitive. Median home sales prices climbed nearly 15% year-over-year, and permitting activity increased, with 158 units approved in the first half of 2025. Notably, Q2 saw the first multi-unit projects permitted since 2023.

- Pennsylvania’s GDP remained positive in Q1, being one of only 10 states with positive economic growth, while the national economy contracted.
